Charles Forte: A short Introduction

Ever wonder where the idea of UFOs and cryptids comes from?

Not as well known, Charles Fort is the man behind the curtain to push these paranormal phenomena into the mainstream conscience.

Charles Fort is the founder of the supernatural. Anything from fish rain to ball lighting or any other strange has been coined the term Fortean.

In this post, we will look into the life and writings of Charles Fort.

The Life of Charles Fort:

Charles Forte begins his writing career when he receives a rich inherence from a rich uncle. With some friends, Charles Fort founded The Fortean Society at the Savoy-Plaza Hotel in New York City on 26 January 1931 by his friends,

Fort held unofficial meetings and had a long history of getting together informally with many of NYC’s literati. Such as Theodore Dreiser and Ben Hecht, at their various apartments where they would talk, have a meal and then listen to short reports. Reports of these meetings mention lively discussions accompanied by great good humor and quantities of wine. Fort was not a joiner of established groups and, perhaps, it is ironic that many such Fortean groups have been established.

Books

Lo!

New Lands

The Book of the Dammed

Wild Talents

A little heads up, Charles Fort’s hard to get through. He has a writing style that is tongue-in check. Something I don’t like.

I have read part of Lo! And Book of the Dammed. Both are interesting. Lo! is about coincidences and how everything is connected. Book of the Dammed is about strange phenomena.

It is recommended to start with Lo! because it is Fort’s first book and doesn’t have his tongue in check writing style.

Conclusion:

Charles Fort is the father of the supernatural. Without him we will not be pondering about UFOs and fish rain.
