Serial Killer Culture: Documentary

Genre: Documentary

Year of Release: 2014

Director: John Borowski

Summary: Serial Killer Culture examines the reasons why artists and collectors are fascinated by serial killers.

The documentary is done in an interview style with no voice over. The first guy is a collator of John Wayne Gacy’s artwork. He even went to the prison, meet the guy, and took a picture with him. There are a few artists who were interviewed as well. Which doesn’t surprise me. I know some weird artists.

One artist paints a painting of crime scenes. He did one of Jonestown and another one of Sharon Tate, which looks pretty cool. There is a folk band and two heavy metal bands that sing about serial killers.

The moral concerns of collecting stuff that belongs to serial killers are addressed. There are some good points made. The first guy that was interviewed stopped doing it when his son was born. People have been collecting serial killer memorabilia (a lot of the people in this doc don’t like referring to it like that) since the Victorian era. There will always be people that are like this.

The main point that is brought up why people collect art and make music about serial killers is to pick apart their brains. To understand how a human, like anyone else, can be so twisted. I see the appeal of why people will collect stuff like this. Also, this is history, and should not be forgotten that there are people like that.

There is one artist who had three girlfriends. Each one was rape. The last one brutally rape and murder. He had to identify the body. What he does is make comic books based on serial killers. It is not unheard of for a tragedy to happen to someone and to develop a morbid sense of life.

If you have a problem with this, then don’t buy the art, don’t listen to the music, and don’t watch the documentary. fyi That was stated in the documentary.
